How to choose the right design studio for your project

 

Choosing the right design studio for your project is a bit of a minefield, in all honesty. You won’t be stuck for choice, that’s for sure! Of course, choice is good – but it can make the business of choosing the right studio all the more confusing.

You’ll see a wide range of specialist services on offer in the design industry too, so it’s important that you have a good idea of what you need before you begin your search.

Here are some handy tips for making sure you choose the right design studio for your needs – a studio that is a perfect fit for your project.

1. Know what you need

This sounds obvious but you’d be surprised how many businesses approach a project without really considering what it entails. It’s vital that you have a pretty good idea of its basic outline, what you need and what you want before you start looking for a design studio.

As well as this, you should set measurable goals for your project. There’s a lot more to it than simply ‘looking good’. Branding and the brand message that your business conveys goes deeper than this (although it needn’t be complicated). Think about what you want your project to achieve: more sales, increased leads or a greater reach.

You also need to be realistic and clear about your budget and deadlines.

2. Know what kind of relationship you want

If you are likely to have ongoing design needs then it makes sense to work with a studio where you deal with the same designer all the time. But, even if your project is a one-off or needs a fast turnaround, don’t underestimate the importance of building relationships.

It stands to reason that some of the best design work comes out of the best relationships. If you are always pleased with the quality of the work produced, using the same design studio on a regular basis can only be a good thing.

Building strong relationships with clients, suppliers, designers, etc. is always good for business – yours and theirs.

3. Size, Skills and Experience

While it’s true that some smaller design studios might not have the skillset or scale to handle multi-faceted or really complex campaigns, this is not always the case. What’s more, you may well find that you get a more personalised service and better value from a smaller design studio. Size sometimes matters, but skills and experience always matter!

4. Portfolios and client testimonials

From a design studio’s case studies and portfolio you should get a good idea of their skills. Look at the type of clients a studio has worked for and their testimonials. A design studio with plenty of satisfied customers is one you are likely to be able to put your faith in.

5. Websites and social media

Much of the information above can be gleaned from a design studio’s website, but it’s not the only info that can be found from an agency’s web and social media presence. Although it’s not the be all and end all, regular activity: blogs, interesting and engaging (not spammy) social media posts, and regular sharing of great content is always a good sign.

And finally… Do you connect? Is there a chemistry?

Sometimes it’s the voice that speaks to you on a design studio’s website, or the quality of that first phone call that you have with a designer that tells you that you’ve find the right design studio for your project. Something ‘just clicks’, your instincts tell you ‘Yes!’ and you know you’ve found the right one!
